About The Profession

The founding of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1899 professionalized the ancient art of landscape architecture. Today there are more than 10,000 members of the A.S.L.A and 56 accredited schools of landscape architecture at universities throughout the United States.

Today the challenges and opportunities for landscape architecture are expanding into areas unimaginable a decade ago. Landscape architects and environmental planners create landscapes ranging from garden plots to entire marsh systems, from the backyard to the region, from the everyday to the sacred. For all the variations and specializations within landscape architecture, the foundation of the profession remains constant.
